The studio began in 1994 when Suzie Hurley and Joanne Klick opened the original studio on Willow Street in Takoma, DC in a small, single studio space with a max capacity of 25 students. The studio hosted about 150 students, 4 faculty members and a single administrative staff member, and was associated with the Anusara school of yoga.
By 1997, the studio had grown to 500 students and entered a phase of expansion, moving to the current location on Carroll Ave in Takoma Park, first with one studio and then expanding further in 1998 and 2000 to add additional spaces in the building, and opening a Silver Spring studio in 2003 with over 2000 students.
Suzie’s son Joe moved back to the DC area in 1998 after having completed his first yoga teacher training and massage certification and joined the Willow Street faculty. In 2012, Joe purchased the studio from Suzie. At the same time, Willow Street separated from the Anusara brand and has since been dedicated to therapeutically oriented and philosophically-grounded yoga regardless of affiliation.
In 2020, with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Willow Street reduced it’s physical presence to one studio in Takoma Park, and has been focused on providing the same, high-quality yoga to our students.
Willow Street Yoga currently offers a robust schedule of online classes, and provides in-person classes at our Takoma Park studio for fully vaccinated students with fully vaccinated staff. WSY meets or exceeds all COVID-19 protocols as directed by the Montgomery County, MD Board of Health.
