When I look back, it is funny how long it took me to act upon my longtime interest to try Pilates. When I finally found my way to a class offered at the YMCA, it clicked. The stretching and core work felt familiar after years of dancing, but I realized it was more than that. I had actually done this before. Early in my dancing days I had an "old school ballet teacher” who had occasionally made these very exercises a part of our warm ups. What I find most amusing now is that I hated those parts of the warmup. And even more fascinating to me, as I think back on my teacher's background, I would not be surprised to learn that she had actually studied with Joe Pilates. Oh, if I had only known then what I know now. If you had told me then, that I would not only enjoy those exercises but teach them, I would have thought you had lost your mind.

I began dancing at our DC neighborhood ballet school when I was four. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to continue dancing at the University of Michigan, where, though an Anthropology major, I was part of a student dance company and took classes in the dance department. After returning to Washington to pursue a graduate degree in Anthropology and Museum Studies, I began teaching dance and performed with local modern dance companies. This enabled me to travel in the US and abroad, including Mexico and Russia. During this time I worked at The Smithsonian Institution, where I met my husband. Upon completing my degree, I worked at The Textile Museum full time. After my daughter was born I left the museum and went back to teaching dance. I loved the work at The Textile Museum, but found going back to teaching dance allowed me to spend time with my daughter, and later my son when he was born.

Having this time to teach dance also allowed me the luxury of finally taking Pilates. As I became a regular at the Y Pilates classes, the instructor told me I had to take class with this amazing teacher she studied with at Willow Street Yoga Center -- Roberta Stiehm. Well, of course she was right and my love of Pilates grew. I started to play with the idea of possibly teaching. I mentioned this cautiously to the Y instructor who responded with, "That's wonderful, you can start teaching this class because my family is moving back home to NY.” Her enthusiastic reaction took me by surprise, to say the least. This was all a little faster than I had planned. After all, I was just "thinking" about it. It always amazes me how timing and the willingness to "go for it” create the most amazing possibilities. This is just what I needed to hear. I immediately started training, became a certified teacher and started teaching the Y classes. The students were wonderfully supportive and encouraging. After more training, another certification, and studying privately with Roberta, I began teaching at Willow Street. Teaching Pilates and sharing this method of exercise is so much more than I anticipated. My favorite moments are my interactions with students. To hear how the Pilates method has helped them and even changed their lives, whether it is getting over an injury or weakness or simply enabling them to accomplish their favorite activities with more ease and enjoyment, is incredibly rewarding.

I am so grateful to have been in the right place at the right time and met wonderful people who have encouraged and taught me so much. Of course, that first Y teacher is on the list, but even more so, Roberta. Her generosity and kindness are beyond words. I have learned so much from her and the training and people she has introduced to me, opening the world of Pilates to me that much more. I am grateful to Willow Street and all the amazing teachers, staff and students. It is not always easy for me to leave the house, especially on a dark, cold and rainy winter night, but the minute I walk in those doors, there is no place else I would rather be.
