Our Instructors
Teacher Feature -- Roberta Stiehm: I am a dancer. I have been a dancer as long as I can remember.
I trained at the Minnesota Dance Theatre in Minneapolis, and went from the school directly into the Professional Company at age 16. I trained strongly in Ballet and Contemporary Dance and toured a lot, dancing all over the world. Several times in my career, circumstances brought my talents and desires together to give me amazing experiences, like being in the National Tours of "A Chorus Line" and even being cast in "Cats" on Broadway (when I had a husband and 18-month-old child living in DC!)
I think like a dancer, so when I started taking Pilates mat classes in 1996 I found that the discipline of Pilates fit right in with my training as a dancer. Every single muscle of the body is incorporated in the Pilates workouts, and the concentration it takes to do everything correctly is tremendous. I love the Pilates work because it is energizing. It deepens my concentration and forces my attention on what my body is doing and feeling through movement. It strengthens my core and limbs incredibly, and makes me feel youthful and strong. When I am having a challenging day, my Pilates practice helps me escape from my thoughts and "Zoom," I am "in the work!" I finish refreshed, worked out, and more calm.
Pilates expanded the way I think about teaching and movement philosophies, and helped me to become a better dance teacher as well. I was certified by Romana Kryzanowska, one of only five living Elders certified by Joseph Pilates himself, in 2000. That makes me a 2nd Generation Teacher.
To preserve the integrity of Joseph Pilates' work, I tend to be fairly strict about precise technique when I teach. First for safety, but also because I teach groups of students, I can watch carefully, to supervise and correct and keep everyone on track. When the class is moving together at the same time, I find I am most effective as a teacher.
I am proud that Willow Street continues to offer the highest level of Pilates instruction from all of our Faculty. The hard work and dedicated teaching of our Pilates teachers past and present-Jessica Sloane, Julia Goodwin, and Milt Pugh-has helped so much to build the Pilates program at WSYC.
Finally, I want to appreciate and encourage the many dedicated Pilates students at WSYC. I know that they, like me, have been enlightened by developing their core strength, and seeing what it does for their bodies, minds, and a healthier life.
