Teacher Feature - Winter 2007: Lucy Lomax
My yogic roots are in the 1970’s with hatha yoga classes through the YMCA. Yoga was a logical progression from Transcendental Meditation, which I had been practicing for a few years. Using the only yoga book I could find, Richard Hittleman’s 28 Day Yoga Plan, I practiced yoga for the next year and continued TM until the early 1980’s. Then a busy schedule of work, business travel, completing bachelors and masters degrees at night and being a single mom took up my time for the next decade.

In 1998, I attended a mind-body spa where I took my first yoga class in years, and connected to yoga on more than just a physical level. From that point on I have studied and practiced yoga.

Teaching Yoga In 1999, a yoga teacher acquaintance encouraged me to combine my love of yoga with my teaching skills. In my 33-year full-time job I was an analyst, technical writer, and teacher of accounting and financial management policy. So I began assisting a yoga teacher and teaching at a local fitness center. In 2003, I retired early from my job to teach yoga full-time.

Teaching Anusara Yoga In 2000, as I searched for a teacher with whom to study and deepen my practice and teaching, the Universe led me 35 miles from my home in Annapolis to Moses Brown’s special Sunday class. I left that class feeling exhilarated oh, and sore from laughing so hard at Moses’ jokes! I knew I wanted to integrate the balance, freedom, and joy from that class into my life.

Anusara Yoga speaks to my heart and soul. It has helped me transform my body and being. I was hyper-mobile and could effortlessly flow into (actually, organically out of) the poses. Unfortunately, that hyper-flexibility was stressing my joints, especially my knees. Anusara Yoga is the only yoga that has taught me the actions to develop and use strength to support my flexibility balanced integrated action, a cornerstone of Anusara Yoga.

I studied with Moses for the next few years. Then I took an Anusara Yoga Teacher Training with Moses and Kathleen Hogan. Since then, I have taken the Willow Street regular and advanced teacher trainings, and studied with Suzie Hurley, Jenny Otto, Moses Brown, Joe Miller, Kate Miller, Marion Griffon, Betsey Downing, Desiree Rumbaugh, and Doug Keller. I have been fortunate to study with some of the most talented and experienced Anusara teachers, most especially my primary teacher and inspiration, the brilliant John Friend.

Teaching and Life I love teaching those new to yoga. It is a delight to see students connect to their body/mind. I especially enjoy teaching the naturally therapeutic applications of Anusara yoga to those with issues or special needs most of us past the age of 35!

Nowadays I live my yoga through craft. I love the meditative aspects of knitting and spinning yarn (yes, I have a spinning wheel!), especially in front of a roaring winter’s fire life is way cool!
