Teacher Feature - Summer 2005: Sheree Mullen
My yoga seeds were planted by my mother who introduced me to reincarnation and Transcendental Meditation when I was a teenager. After high school, I spent six years in the army, living in Germany for three years. In 1981, I attended a stress management class at the University of Maryland and was introduced to yoga (asana). I did triathlons, century bike rides and other sports. I used some poses to stretch, (yoga was "just stretching") and thought I'd give it a try someday when I had time.

That day came 15 years later! In 1996, instead of taking a planned ski vacation, I was snowed in with my two young daughters. I moped for five days then pulled out a yoga video I received the year before but never opened. My practice began with that video. Six months later I quit my job as employee trainer at the largest nursing home in Maryland to be home with my kids. I tried several yoga classes before meeting SaraBess Forrester, a Sivananda teacher. Staying home with young children gave me an opportunity to open to the many gifts of yoga. I'm deeply grateful to SaraBess for teaching yoga as a spiritual practice. Her class became a lifeline to my sanity.

In 1998, after the birth of my third daughter, a friend took me to WSYC's open house. I began a class with Suzie. I had struggled with what I thought was a painfully tight hamstring for many months. Suzie immediately recognized it as an attachment injury and helped me to heal. As yoga's gifts continued to unfold for me, I thought about combining it with my profession, teaching. I have a BS and MS in health education.

I began WSYC’s YTT program in Oct 1999 and began teaching at WSYC in Jan 2000. The Universe continues to unfold in surprising, wonderful, (sometimes painful), but always interesting ways. My "first teacher" from that long ago video, Rod Stryker, was invited to WSYC in 2001. I continue to grow so much from my yearly studies with him. I began studying with John Friend in 1998. The joy, alignment and high standards for Anusara teachers drew me to this kula. I completed my teacher training, became an Affiliated Anusara teacher, and have completed all but one requirement for certification...the "perfect" video will be completed soon!

Thank you to my students who have repeatedly been on "candid camera"! I get such joy from sharing the gifts of this practice with each of you. My daughters Cara, Carleigh and Kelly are often my greatest teachers. You ensure that I never lose touch with ferocious love, great humility, and you guarantee me at least one smile a day - thank you. I am grateful to continue studies with Rod Stryker, John Friend, Suzie, Moses, and many other wonderful WSYC teachers. This is a great community!
