What brought you to Willow Street?

Our kids led the way to yoga and Willow Street for us! Our daughters, Emma and Grace, were about 11 and 14 years old when they started doing yoga to a yard sale video in the basement. From there, they moved on to the teen class at WSYC and our youngest, Grace (now 22 and still doing yoga in California!), spent middle and high school enjoying teen yoga every Sunday. It kept her busy life sane and balanced. Seeing their positive experience sparked our interest and when the Silver Spring studio opened eight years ago, Dori joined the work-study program and began taking gentle yoga classes. Mark joined the yoga bandwagon a couple of years later. Now we take multiple classes every week with a variety of teachers. We also have enjoyed fantastic workshops over the years. Our yoga study has been a family affair! Even our son, Troy, who was 23 at the time and living nearby, took yoga and was humored when Moses kept asking if he was Mark’s brother!

What keeps you coming?

When I look back, it is funny how long it took me to act upon my longtime interest to try Pilates. When I finally found my way to a class offered at the YMCA, it clicked. The stretching and core work felt familiar after years of dancing, but I realized it was more than that. I had actually done this before. Early in my dancing days I had an "old school ballet teacher” who had occasionally made these very exercises a part of our warm ups. What I find most amusing now is that I hated those parts of the warmup. And even more fascinating to me, as I think back on my teacher's background, I would not be surprised to learn that she had actually studied with Joe Pilates. Oh, if I had only known then what I know now. If you had told me then, that I would not only enjoy those exercises but teach them, I would have thought you had lost your mind.

Adventures in Pilates

I took my first yoga class at Willow Street almost 10 years ago, and for almost that long, the studio has been my home-away-from-home. The warmth of my teachers and fellow students, the wonderful feeling of fully inhabiting my body through practice, the piles of multicolored blankets -- all of these contributed to a sense of wellbeing so lovely, I've devoted my life to it.

And yet, in the midst of the cozy, there was this other facet of Willow Street that was so...unfamiliar. Mysterious. In my yoga neighborhood, Pilates was like the fancy, intimidating house with the alluring neighbors I hadn't worked up the nerve to meet yet. The more I passed up Pilates classes on the schedule, the more enigmatic they seemed, and the more I stayed away.
